As a way to clear out my "fabric stash" I thought I would make a bunch of pillowcases. It was a good idea and I got to work. I had almost a dozen made when I realized, I don't need pillowcases so what in the world am I going to do with a dozen pillowcases? Christmas was coming so I thought briefly of giving them away as gifts but wasn't too excited about that either. As I was going about my day it just came to me...donate them to a women and children's shelter. So I Googled local shelters, chose one and called. I told them about my project to make lots of pillowcases and asked if they would have a need for them, especially at Christmas time. She was so excited. She said that when a new woman or family comes in, the first thing they give them is a new pillow and pillowcase but all their cases are old hotel pillowcases. So they are a bit worn out and only white. That got me excited too! The idea of getting your own pretty pillowcase or kids pattern one when your whole life is turned upside down was a nice thought. I asked how many would they need and she said they are 150 beds and they are always full at Christmas time. Wow! 150! I'm going to need more fabric than my "stash" could provide :) I told some sister's in my ward about my new project and they helped add to my "stash" I also watched out for the coupons for the fabric store. I sewed and crocheted pretty edging to lots and lots of pillowcases. I wasn't counting as I went, just kept sewing and sewing. I was getting worried I wouldn't have enough or get them done in time. I finished with the fabric I had then counted how many to determine how much more fabric I needed to buy. I had made 178 pillowcases!!! AND it was only the first of December! I did it. I had reached my goal, and then some, and in time. I delivered my piles of pillowcases and walked away with such a good feeling. I really do hope those women and kids have at least a small feeling of the love and care I put into making those pillowcases for them during their time of need. I wanted to come up with another service project and soon!
